Currency

Official currency of Belize is Belize Dollar (BZD; symbol BZ$), which is divided into 100 cents. Notes come in denominations of BZ$100, BZ$50, BZ$20, BZ$10, BZ$5 and BZ$2. Coins are in denominations of BZ$1, and 50, 25, 10, 5 and 1 cents.

The Belize dollar is tied to the US dollar at a rate of $1USD = BZ$1.96

Foreign Currency Exchange

Most businesses accept US dollars as a payment (the amount will be converted at a rounded rate of 1:2), but the change will likely be given in Belize dollars or a mix of Belize and US dollars. Some businesses quote prices in US dollars so make sure before the purchase. Other currencies are generally not accepted at stores, so visitors from countries other than the US would need to exchange money in Belize or bring US dollars.

Money can be exchanged at banks or money changers (Casas de Cambio). Visitors from countries other than US will get the best deal changing the money to US dollars before they arrive in Belize. Also, try to spend or exchange back all your Belize dollars before you leave - Belize dollars are very difficult to exchange outside Belize or you will be offered a very low rate.

ATM's

Automated Teller Machines (ATM's) are available and accept foreign-issued cards on the Visa, MasterCard, Plus, Cirrus and some on Visa Electron systems. The ATM's are not available everywhere, though. Currently internationally accessible ATM's are only in major cities or towns and tourist destinations, including Belize City, San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Placencia, Punta Gorda, San Ignacio, Belmopan, Dangriga, and Corozal Town.

Credit Cards

Credit cards are accepted by larger hotels, shops or restaurants as well as by car rental companies. Most often accepted cards are Visa and MasterCard, followed by American Express. Credit cards can also be used at ATMs or in banks to withdraw cash. Many businesses will add a 5% service charge to the bills when paying by credit card.

Traveler's Checks

Traveler's checks can be cashed in most banks. A commission will typically apply.

Banking Hours

Typically banks are open from 8:00am to 1:00pm, Monday to Thursday, and 8:00am to 4:30pm on Fridays.
