Canada is the second largest country in the world by total area, occupying most of the northern part of North America (with the only exclusion being Alaska). Canada borders Atlantic Ocean to the east, Arctic Ocean to the north, Pacific Ocean to the west and the United States to the south. Canada also has the longest coastline in the world (243,000 km / 151,000 mi) and is home to the northernmost permanent settlement, at latitude 82.5°N, on Ellesmere Island.

Canada is a federation comprising ten provinces and tree territories: Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatoon, Alberta, British Columbia and northern territories of Nunavut, Northwest Territories and Yukon.
