Currency
The official currency of Cayman Islands is Cayman Islands Dollar (code KYD; symbol CI$), divided into 100 cents. Available notes come in denominations of CI$100, CI$50, CI$25, CI$10, CI$5 and CI$1. Coins come in denominations of 25, 10, 5 and 1 cents.
The Cayman Islands dollar is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of CI$1 = US$1.25. US dollar is also accepted as payment by all businesses, but the change may be given in CI$.
Foreign Currency Exchange
Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks, money exchange offices or hotels. Hotels tend to give worse rates. Although Cayman Islands dollar is tied to the US dollar, the rates for exchange will include a fee (most banks charge four cents per dollar) and the final rates vary slightly.
If you bring US dollars to Cayman Islands, there is no need to exchange them - they are accepted everywhere.
Visitors to Cayman Islands should pay attention to which currency the prices are being quoted - CI$ or US dollars. Since some businesses tend to quote prices in US dollars (mostly hotels) and others in Cayman Island dollars (like restaurants or shops), it is easy to make a mistake.
