Climate & Weather in Chile

Flag of Chile

Chile is situated south of the equator which means the seasons fall at opposite times of year from the northern hemisphere. The summer months are from December to February and the winter lasts from June to August. Because Chile's territory spans a very long distance from north to south, and because the eastern parts of the country are occupied by the Andes, the climate varies greatly depending on the region.

The climate in the capital Santiago and central, coastal Chile is characterized by a Mediterranean - type weather with well defined seasons, hot (maximum 28C to 32C / 82F to 90F), almost rainless summers and short, warm and moderately wet winters when temperatures rarely drop below the freezing point.

Much of the north part of the country, excluding the mountains, is very arid - in fact, one of the driest regions in the world. The south, on the other hand, is wet all year round with frequently changeable weather, cool and cloudy summers.

A Costa Rican Fairytale: Beauty And The Beach

Costa Rica literally translates into "Rich Coast," so named by Columbus for the gold necklaces worn by the native people when he arrived in the early 16th century. However misleading the name might have been for gold hunters, it appropriately describes Costa Rica's copious coastline...

Three Spots for a Quiet Afternoon in Paris

There are so many things to see in Paris and so little time to do it that your journey in the French capital can wind up taking the colors of a marathon run. I offer you a different take on it: stop, review your options, and decide to kill a couple of hours doing just nothing but reading a good book in a spot where you can be left to yourself. Here are three spots where you can do just that.
