Climate & Weather in Ecuador

Flag of Ecuador

There are several different climates and micro-climates in Ecuador and temperatures are more determined by the elevation than the season. In general, the weather in Ecuador tends to be very unpredictable and can change greatly during the day.

Ocean currents shape the weather of the Galápagos Islands and the mainland coastal areas. These regions are hot and rainy from January to April. Average temperatures range from 25°C / 77°F to 31°C / 90°F. The dry season lasts there from May to December, when also the temperatures fall by a few degrees. The garúa - a thick, foggy mist - is often present during the dry, cooler season.

The highlands are generally drier, with the dry season from June to September. Spring-like weather all year round is characteristic for the central valley, where temperatures rarely exceed 24°C / 66°F.

The Oriente region is very rainy all year round. Most rainy months are between April and June. The driest months are September through December. Temperatures are almost as high as at the coast.
