Currency
El Salvador uses US dollar (code USD; symbol US$) as country's official currency. Circulated notes come in denominations of US$100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1. Coins are in denominations of US$1, and 50, 25, 10, 5 and 1 cents.
Foreign Currency Exchange
Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks or money exchange offices.
The best choice for travelers is to bring US dollars and don't worry about exchanging cash. Some currencies may be difficult to exchange.
ATMs
Automated Teller Machines (ATMs; cajeros automáticos in Spanish) are available in most cities and tows. Most ATMs accept international debit and credit cards on Plus/Visa and Cirrus/MasterCard systems.
Credit Cards
Credit Cards are widely accepted in El Salvador. Most commonly accepted are Visa and MasterCard, followed by American Express. Diners Club cards have more limited use. Smaller businesses may charge additional 5-10% when paying by credit card.
Traveler's Checks
Traveler's checks can be exchanged for cash at banks or at hotels. Passport will be required.
American Express checks in US dollars are recommended.
Banking Hours
Typically banks in El Salvador are open from 9:00am to 1:00pm and 1:45pm to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday and from 9:00am to 1:00pm on Saturdays.
