Finland's weather is characterized by short and mild summers, long, cold and snowy winters and precipitation that's spread relatively evenly over all seasons. During summer northern parts of the country experience days without a sunset and southern parts have very short 2-3 hours periods of relative darkness per day. Winters on the other hand feature very short days in the south and "polar nights" in the north. During winter most of the country is covered with snow that can remain until April. It can start snowing as early as in October. The mildest winters are is in the southeastern parts of Finland.

The temperatures vary from north to south. The north experiences daytime high averages from -8°C / 17°F in February to 17°C / 64°F in July and the south from -3°C / 27°F in February to 21°C / 70°F in July.
