Travelers, particularly those from outside European Union, are advised to purchase medical travel insurance. EU citizens, holders of European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), are eligible for free or reduced-cost emergency medical treatment (with the exception of treatment in private hospitals or clinics).

Safety

Although the crime rate in France has risen recently, the country is generally a travel destination. Biggest problems tourist encounter in France are small thefts (pick-pocketing, bag snatching), most likely to occur in crowded places like airports, museums, trains etc.

Visitors are advised to take regular precautions to protect their safety and property. Leave the valuables in hotel safe, photocopy your passport, credit cards, plane tickets, driver’s licence, and other important documents, wear a hidden money belt. When traveling by car in southern France, it is also recommended to keep the doors locked and windows closed at all times, to protect from thieves on motorbikes who steal bags from cars while stopped at traffic lights.
