Puerto Rico, officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is a self-governing territory of the United States located in the northeastern Caribbean, to the east of the Dominican Republic and west of the U.S. Virgin Islands. It consists of the island of Puerto Rico and a number of smaller islands, with the largest of them being Vieques, Culebra, and Mona. Puerto Rico is the smallest and the most eastern island of the Greater Antilles.
Over 60% of the territory is mountainous (the interior of the island), with the highest point Cerro de Punta, 1,338 m (4,389 ft). Other Puerto Rican landscapes include rain forests, yellow sand beaches, deserts and caves (the island has the third largest subterranean river system in the world).
