Climate & Weather in Romania

Due to Romania's location, is most parts of it have a continental climate, particularly in Moldavia and Wallachia (east of the Carpathians and south of the Transylvanian Alps, respectively) and to a lesser extent in centrally located Transylvania, where the climate is more moderate. Romania's climate is also characterized by with four distinct seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn.

Typically winters are long (from December to March) and severe. The coldest parts of the country in winter are the Carpathian Mountains and the mildest are on the coast. Summers (from May to July) are hot, especially in the south, and prolonged autumns (August to November) bring milder and dryer weather with more pleasant temperatures. Characteristic are short springs that quickly transform into summers.

The average annual rainfall in Romania is 675mm (26.6 in) with twice that occurring in the mountains and the Danube Delta being the driest part with only half of the average rainfall.

If the main reason for your visit to Romania is sightseeing, then the best times to visit are the end of April to the beginning of July and from end of August to the end of October when the weather is most pleasant. Bird watching enthusiasts who want to visit the Danube Delta should pick mid-April to mid-May or October.
