Health

Medical services and facilities in Switzerland are excellent and can provide more than adequate care in case of emergency or illness. European travelers that have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will be entitled to free or reduced-cost necessary emergency medical treatment. Full medical travel insurance is recommended for all travelers.

Food and Water

Unless specifically marked, tap water is drinkable everywhere in the country. Food is safe to consume.

Safety

Switzerland is considered one of the safest countries in Europe and has a low rate of violent crime. Petty crime, mostly in form of pick-pocketing and purse snatching still occurs and foreign travelers can become its targets.

Travelers should pay particular attention to their belongings near bus or train stations, airports (especially in Zurich and Geneva), and some public parks or other crowded areas. Also on trains, especially on overnight routes, thieves can steel from passengers while they sleep.

The emergency phone number in Switzerland is 117.
