Getting Around
Traveling by coach or bus is the most common way of getting around in Tanzania. On major routes there is a choice of two kinds of buses: express and regular. Express buses, more expensive, make fewer stops, are less crowded and depart on schedule. Some of them are air-conditioned and have toilets. They also have luggage compartments.
It is recommended to book tickets in advance. It is not recommended to buy tickets from anyone on the bus station who tries to sell it to you - always buy them at the office.
Major providers are: Dar Express, Royal Coach and Scandinavian Express
For the trips away from main routes the only option is a minibus. They are usually overcrowded, often with local people carrying bags of produce or even animals. Schedules are practically absent.
Shared taxis are another option, but are not commonly available, except northern parts of Tanzania, near Arusha.
